About Nicole Carvajal
Theme
‘The paintings I create, lean on loose elements from reality, in a poetical context and in a concrete way. The relation to femininity has a big role in my work, especially the representation of women the way male artists picture them. I feel challenged to shape the process of watching and being watched between men and women, artist and model. My work has a spiritual weight, balanced by irony and the use of colour.’
In her most recent works, Carvajal is inspired by flora and fauna as a theme. Carvajal: ‘Nature is a symbol for fertility, but for me it is also a symbol for the unpredictable’. For example in Carvajals fantasy a dark wood represents threat and a window symbolizes hope. She continues: ‘My childhood, or l’âge de l’innocence is over. For me it means that I go back more to my inner self and my roots – in my work as well.’
